Eating Too Much Potato Chips During Pregnancy can be Harmful

A recent study warns that a pregnant woman should not consume too much potato chip because it can increase pregnancy complications.

During pregnancy, the mother has to be very careful about what to eat and what not to. A woman tries her best to know every detail about pregnancy diet to avoid mistakes. A recent study throws some light on the do's and don'ts of pregnancy diet.

The study warns that a pregnant woman should not consume too much vegetable oil and potato chips. Too much consumption of vegetable oil and potato chips can increase the risk of pregnancy complication and poor development of the fetus.

The study further explained that these two ingredients contain omega 6 fats and linoleic acid which leads to inflammation when over consumed. Consumption of linoleic acid three times more than recommended is harmful during pregnancy. This also increases the risk of heart diseases.

The study was published in The Journal of Physiology. "It is important for pregnant women to consider their diet, and our research is yet another example that potentially consuming too much of a certain type of nutrient can have a negative impact on the growing baby," said study lead author Deanne Skelly, Professor at Griffith University in Australia.

The study was conducted on rats and three major changes were noted in rat mothers who consumed a diet high in linoleic acid- reduction in the hormone which promoted growth and development of the baby, circulating concentrations of protein which can lead to contraction of the uterus and altered concentrations of inflammatory proteins by the liver.

Other foods that you should avoid during pregnancy include:

  • Alcohol
  • Overconsumption of caffeine
  • Papaya
  • Raw eggs
  • Fish rich in mercury
  • Raw meat
  • Raw sprouts
  • Processed foods
  • Unpasteurized milk and juices
