Alex Rodriguez Starved Himself So He Wouldn't "Look Fat" at Met Gala

  • Alex Rodriguez posted a YouTube video where he says he didn't eat for 24 hours and wore a special suit to help him lose 6.5 pounds in the days leading up to the Met Gala.
  • Rodriguez normally wears a size 48 tuxedo, but planned to wear a custom size 44 Versace tuxedo for the event.
  • In the hours before the Met Gala, Rodriguez said he was so hungry he "could barely complete a sentence."

If, like me, your 2019 Met Gala invitation got lost in the mail, it might be for the best. It's been almost a week since fashion's biggest night, and Alex Rodriguez recently dropped a video on YouTube where he revealed that he starved himself for 24 hours, worked out multiple times a day, and wore a sweat suit in order to fit into his pink Versace tuxedo.

Its proof that male celebrities also feel intense pressure to look good on the red carpet. "I used to exercise for big games against the Red Sox, now I exercise not to look fat at the Met Ball," Rodriguez said on-camera.

In the weekend leading up to the Met Gala, the sports legend described his plan to fit into a size 44 tuxedo, four sizes smaller than his usual 48: "No carbs, no sugar. I have to do yoga in the morning, yoga at night. Go running in Central Park. Make sure I fit in this pink outfit."

A-Rod and his fiancĂ©e Jennifer Lopez are known to do fast cardio—aka doing cardio exercises on an empty stomach—and other intense fitness challenges together. But Rodriguez's pre-Met Gala plan seemed to take things to an extreme.

On Monday, two hours before the event, we see him walking down the street in sunglasses and this "goofy suit that I'm wearing. It's to sweat, baby, sweat. I have this crazy pink tuxedo that Jennifer and Versace are making me wear. I need to lose exactly 6.5 pounds. I'm taking two yoga classes, and I'm riding the stairs for an hour. I haven't eaten in 24 hours. I did Sunday night baseball...I couldn't even complete a sentence I was so hungry." (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that people who lose weight gradually, at 1-2 pounds per week, are most successful at keeping the weight off.)

The poor guy was dreaming about being able to eat afterward. "I can't wait for an hour after the Met Gala," he said. "We're going to go down to the hood and have our best pizza. I cannot wait. I'm going to eat an entire pizza."

As the video goes on—and 69 (!) people were elsewhere helping JLo ready—things get even sadder:

I'm going to have to hold my stomach in all night.

I haven't had steak in four days. That gets me really angry.

I looked at myself last night at Sunday night baseball, I looked like I got hit, ran over by an 18-wheeler.

By the time he was ready to get into his outfit, it seemed his pizza party plans had already changed. "There is no after party. I need sleep. I have an appointment with my bed."

There's no doubt that Jennifer and Alex looked fabulous on their big night, but we hope they take it a bit easier on themselves next time!
